The feature centered on an interview with Chief Rabbi Yeshayah Elazar Cohen, who said, “I once visited a large Jewish school in France that had thousands of students. It was an enormous school with an impressive building, yet I didn’t find a single sign giving the name of the place or directions to find it. I found this very surprising. I was told that this was because of the fear of anti-Semitism, which made it too dangerous to publicize the name or purpose of this large building. This was in the enlightened country of France. Yet here, in Kazakhstan, which has not yet celebrated 20 years of independence, there is no fear of anti-Semitism because there is complete freedom of religion, and we can be proud and freely put up large signs outside our synagogues.”
