Professor Hershkowitz was in Kazakhstan as part of an economic forum that was held in Astana. As soon as he arrived, even though he had just spent several hours on a long and exhausting flight, he immediately took the opportunity to meet with the Chief Rabbi of Kazakhstan, Rabbi Yeshayah Elazar Cohen. Minister Hershkowitz was very interested in the Jews of Kazakhstan and their relationship with the government and their non-Jewish neighbors. He was pleased to hear that they live in good conditions and are able to lead Jewish lives without any hindrance.
Professor Hershkowitz expressed the hope that more countries around the world would learn to treat their minorities so well. He was very inspired by the government’s policy of tolerance and mutual respect.
