This year, there was a particularly festive atmosphere on Purim in Almaty. For about a month beforehand, the local shluchim worked hard to build a successful program of activities that would be suitable for every Jew. These activities included farbrengens and parties for various age groups.
Each activity included a megillah reading, giving half a shekel, mishloach manot, a grand Purim meal, and gifts for the poor, all of which are the mitzvahs of Purim.
On the night of Purim, the children got dressed up. Some of them dressed as characters from the Purim story, and everyone sat in the courtyard. Inside the shul, there was a joyful farbrengen.
The next morning, the local Jews attended Shacharit at the Jewish center that was followed by a reading of the Megillah. Afterwards, senior citizens attended a Purim party organized in their honor where they observed the mitzvahs of Purim and enjoyed a delicious meal.
That evening, parents and very young children attended a special party where they heard the Megillah and attended a Shuk Purim with stands and competitions. Each child received a mishloach manot package, which they exchanged with each other so that they could fulfill the mitzvah.
Local people enjoyed a farbrengen towards the end of the day, with much wine, song, and plenty of Chassidus. Everyone left afterwards, feeling inspired and full of Purim spirit.
